Everyone has voiced several opinions about this topic. I don't know who created it but there is a society out there that's believes we own them a life . yes we need to help them and educate them on drug use. I don't think we need injection stations that some officials are promoting. its seems like this would be a reward for there choice of life style. because there is an antidote out there for some drugs doesn't mean that it is safe to use and doesn't have side affects which it does, so be carefull

all you have to do is see the effect of narcan working once on an od to see how integral it is that it is available! My first time was a long time ago.... before this epidemic hit again... the 20 something girl went from dead essentially to awake and living to see another day. I understand "junkies" are thought of as destroying themselves and while this is true on some levels, until you see the hold heroin has on its victims (also other opiates), you wont understand the true illness drug addiction is. Think about this, if your child, the one you raised RIGHT and assured was safe and had opportunity for anything, decides to try drugs and then next thing you know, he/she is full blown drug addict. why? maybe masking another issue, maybe just prone to addictive behavior, it really doesn't matter. What matters is that like diabetics that don't use their meds or care for themselves correctly, these addicts are ill and have the right to be saved just like the diabetic with a low blood sugar or in DKA. Think about that non compliant patient you pick up over and over again, the smoking copder, the diabetic who refuses to do what is required to care for themselves. Do you not provide the care because they "did it to themselves". Pray you never have to wonder if someone will be able to provide your child with a life saving medication if needed.... Pray hard because it can happen to anyone.

and for those that feel addicts will look for narcan to save them, remember its effect, it reverses the effect they are seeking with the heroin. while it may save their lives, it also makes them very uncomfortable... you have to understand how an addict thinks and how their illness affects them. EMS needs more training in addiction.
