CISM is a proven effective strategy. that being said, not everyone feels it is beneficial in every situation. So much good is done by just listening to each other and not judging. this is such a high stress field, if we are not there for each other, it is detrimental on all levels. relaxing and unwinding needs to be done by finding things OUTSIDE of EMS that you enjoy. EMS is a brotherhood and I think people tend to forget they don't always have to be in EMT mode. Answering every call (volunteer) isn't always the best for you to do when you spend an exorbitant amount of time on the job. Use some judgment on how much you are immersing yourself.

I agree with Rod here, it is important for not only the provider themselves to recognize when they need to talk to someone, but also their co-workers or partners. We see and work with our partners as much and sometimes more than their families do, if you notice that something is off its important that you express your concern without prying. Suggest talking to someone whether it be a member of a CISD team or not, anything helps.

I have worked full time in EMS for many years . I have seen many things that i wish i had not. There are many times i have been asked to participate in CISD's and chose not too. Anxiety and stress affect everyone differently. I absolutely feel the services offered with stress debriefings and counseling are critical and essential for ems providers to have access to, but some people need to be able to deal with things in their own way and time. I am one of those people. Basically i am saying how different people deal with grief and stress is a very personal procedure with many avenues to follow, but ultimately counseling services absolutely must be available for those who could benefit from them.

After a stressful call one of my favorite things to do is exercise and blast music. The endorphins from exercise help clear out my thoughts so I can think about the situation clearly and the physical exhaustion of exercise helps burn off the remainder of the adrenal response. The music helps reflect whatever mood I am in. The type of music I choose helps me understand exactly what mentality I am in and then I can choose the appropriate course of action to address that mood.
